Nasal Growth or Tumour

Specialized evaluation and management for Nasal Growth or Tumour at our Johor Bahru ENT clinic.

Overview

Nasal growths can be non-cancerous (benign) like nasal polyps, or they can be cancerous (malignant). These growths can occur in the nasal cavity or the paranasal sinuses and can cause symptoms by obstructing airflow or pressing on surrounding structures.

Common symptoms

  • Nasal obstruction or congestion, often on only one side
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Reduced sense of smell (anosmia)
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Nasal discharge, sometimes blood-stained or foul-smelling
  • Headaches or changes in vision (if the growth affects the sinuses near the eyes)

When to see an ENT

  • Persistent nasal blockage, especially if only on one side
  • Unexplained and recurrent nosebleeds
  • New facial swelling or pain
  • Any growth that is visible inside the nostril

What we do

  • Detailed history and physical examination
  • Nasal endoscopy for direct visualization of the growth and its origin
  • Imaging studies such as CT or MRI to determine the extent of the growth
  • Biopsy: Taking a small sample of the tissue for laboratory analysis to determine the type of growth

Management

  • Benign Growths/Polyps: Medical management with steroid sprays/tablets or surgical removal (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery - FESS)
  • Inverting Papilloma: Surgical excision due to its potential to recur and a small risk of turning malignant
  • Malignant Tumours: Multidisciplinary treatment including surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy
