Overview
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) arises behind the nose and has higher prevalence in Southeast Asia. Early symptoms can be subtle, so targeted screening in at-risk individuals is important.
Common symptoms
- Persistent blocked nose or blood-stained nasal discharge
- One-sided ear blockage or hearing loss (middle ear fluid in adults)
- Neck lump(s)
- Headache, double vision, or facial numbness (advanced)
When to see an ENT
- Unexplained one-sided ear symptoms in adults
- Recurrent nosebleeds or persistent nasal symptoms
- Any new, painless neck lump lasting >2 weeks
- Family history of NPC or known risk factors
What we do
- Nasal endoscopy to visualise the nasopharynx
- Imaging (MRI/CT) and biopsy when indicated
- Coordinated care with oncology and radiotherapy teams
Treatment
- Stage-based management, typically radiotherapy – chemotherapy
- Symptom control and nutrition support
- Structured follow-up for recurrence surveillance
